KARACHI: According to official sources, the existing ownership arrangement for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) team Multan Sultans expires on December 31, 2025, and the PCB will take over in 2026.
A policy decision on the issue is anticipated within a week, according to the PCB sources. According to The News on Friday, the proposed plan calls for the PCB to oversee Multan Sultans for a year before selling the license to a new owner at auction in 2027.
The PCB would save roughly $4 million a year if the plan is implemented since it wouldn’t have to pay an additional $1 million in sponsorship funds or $3 million from the central pool. The PCB would not get the $8.5 million franchise fee for that year, according to a study from an audit firm.
Ali Tareen, the owner of the Multan Sultans, revealed on social media in November that he was leaving the PSL team. According to sources, the PCB and Ali Tareen’s relationship had been tense for the previous year and had finally reached a breaking point.
At the time, the Schon Group acquired Multan Sultans as the sixth PSL team for $5.2 million, making it the most costly franchise—twice the price of Karachi Kings, which cost $2.6 million.
However, the Schon Group allegedly realized the deal was not feasible after the first season. The PCB ended the deal when franchise payments were not received.
Alamgir Tareen and his nephew Ali Tareen paid $6.3 million to purchase the franchise in December 2018. Since then, the team has been among the PSL’s most competitive teams, but persistent disagreements between the owners and PCB have now resulted in a change in ownership and management.
